About Big Bear

Big Bear Lake is a beautiful resort community, approximately 100 miles, northeast of Los Angeles. It surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest and it is home to South California’s two premier ski resorts: Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.


Prior to 1845, for more than 1000 years, the lake was known as Yuhaviat, which is an Indian word that, in English translation, means “Pine Place”. The current name became an idea, when Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into Yuhaviat Valley, with a posse of 20 men, chasing Indians, who had been raiding their ranches, in Riverside, and found that the place was swarming with bears.

Big Bear City Airport Area


The airport serves Southern California's only four season resort - Big Bear, including several of the surrounding small communities, with general aviation air service. Although, the airport does not have any commercial flights, it does however, offer several other services, including sightseeing flights and aerial photography. Due to the fact that it has a history that goes way back to 1928, the airport has become a historical “landmark”, and, somewhat, a popular tourist attraction.
